Eric "Shorty" Iles featured so large in Dad's tales that he clearly deserves a section to himself. A brilliant Spitfire pilot, he joined the SAAF at more or less the same time as Dad, and they fought together in Italy.  But it wasn't Shorty's heroism or brilliance as a pilot that got him talked about...
